Do you know how long it's been since I've seen a forecast like this for our area?? Just wanted to be sure to capture it----I'll believe when I actually see it come true!!

Oil Cloth Goodness

You may remember that I won a half yard of this wonderful Amy Butler oilcloth a little while back. This weekend, I whipped up a little project with it. Since I have a new iPhone, I decided this was the perfect fabric to use to make a little case. I used a eyeglasses microfiber cloth for the lining. I just love the gingham that Kelly included as a surprise. Since this just took such a small scrap of fabric, I'm hoping to make a few other purse organizing items with the remainder.

100 Photos-Contrast

I found this calm, serene setting in a small pond right next to the busy parkway I was driving on. I took the exit and snapped a few pictures of the egrets as they stood completely still while cars rushed by. Such contrast to the busy road I traveled on.

Mardi Gras Madness

As I went to the store this morning, the crowds were already gathering along the duckpond surrounding my neighborhood.
A few minutes ago, I returned to find:
barricades set up. . .
Port A Potties in place . . .
Souvenirs for sale . . .
fire pits going and the smell of barbecue in the air . . .
and crowds of people beginning to fill the streets.
While it looks like a giant tailgate party, it's actually preparation for the first Mardi Gras parade of the season which is set to begin in about 2 hours. Centaur will roll through with lots of floats, street performers, throws and fun. I have several friends in the Krewe, so I may walk down when it gets closer to our area (4 or 5 hours from now) and see if I can spot them.

Oh When The Saints . . .

Saints fever is definitely in full swing around here!!! I've never quite seen anything like it in this area before. Of course, the Saints have never gone to the Super Bowl before either! Today was officially "Saints Day" here at most of the schools and around the city. At each school I visited today, everyone from the tiniest students to the oldest teachers were decked out in black and gold. I even saw Saints shirts being sold on a busy street corner.

I wore a black shirt to school today, but decided that perhaps I need to "step it up" a bit and get more in the spirit. In fact, this seems like the perfect time to try out the freezer paper painting technique I've been reading about here and here and even over here. I picked up this long-sleeve tee at Hobby Lobby for just $3.99. . .Gathered a few supplies that I already had on hand (I ended up using plain black acrylic rather than this screen printing paint) . . .. . . and set to work.I cut out a fleur de lis from the freezer paper and ironed it to the front of the shirt.
I mixed some gold acrylic paint with some textile medium that I've had in a box for many years---don't know if that kind of stuff goes bad, but I gave it a try.After that layer dried, I ironed on a second stencil that was slightly smaller and painted it with black paint.This was a super easy project and I'm pretty pleased with the results.
I think I'll dress for Mardi Gras tomorrow (the first parade is tomorrow night) and save this shirt for Sunday afternoon.
